Cochlear Implant Surgery - Day 2

At midnight she woke and had a really good drink of milk and water and was pointing towards her lunchbox. I gave her a jar of baby food which she ate well and a little bit of banana. The night nurse (who was lovely and a real contrast to Gaynor!) came in and checked her pulse/ O2 levels etc and we gave her some more pain relief. This time, she managed to swallow it. I got Taylor back into her cot after that and she slept soundly, giving me some well needed sleep too!

At 3:30am, Taylor was due for her next lot of IV antibiotics and as she was still asleep, the nurse managed to get them into her through the bars of the cot. She also had some codeine for her and Taylor amazingly opened her mouth for it while still laying down. She then slept on until about 6am when she woke for another drink and came into bed with me for cuddles and went back to sleep.

Our nurse Deborah from yesterday came on at 7am and it was lovely to see her. She suggested that it would be good for Taylor to have a bit of a walk around – so we walked about the ward a couple of times.

Taylor was very wobbly on it and kept on wanting to be picked up.

Breakfast arrived and I made some weetbix and toast for Taylor – most of which ended up on the floor, but she did manage a wee bit! I set her toys out and we sat and played for a while.

The surgeon, Mr Murray came in to see her about 8:30am and was very happy with her progress. She was due for her last lost of IV antibiotics at 11:30am and then he was quite happy for us to go home.

We went for a few more walks about the ward and each time Taylor was getting a little steadier on her feet.

Craig arrived around 9:30am after dropping Caitlyn to school and Taylor was very happy to see him. It was so good to be able to share load with him as I was feeling quite tired.

At 10am we took Taylor down for an x-ray in radiology. We were quite worried about how we were meant to ke

ep her still, but it went very well. We both had to wear huge lead aprons and held her on each side. It was very quick and they gave us a print out of the x-ray so we could see the im

plant and the coil into Taylor’s cochlear. The purpose of the x-ray was to give them a map of where it was sitting right from the start, just in case there were any changes/ movement in the future. She was given a couple of stickers by the x-ray staff for being so good.

We went back to the ward and played for a bit longer. Our nurse said that she was very happy with Taylor’s progress and if we wanted to go home, she would give the last lot of antibiotics half an hour earlier. Once that was done, she has the nasty job of removing the shunt/ lure – although Taylor was not happy, I think she was quite relieved to have the bandage off her arm. She had only just started pulling at it and I think if it had been on for any longer, she might have pulled it right off.

At just about 11am Taylor was discharged and after picking up her prescription of pain killers, we headed home. She looked very happy and content when she realised she was going in the car and fell asleep when we stopped at the supermarket to get a few things.

Taylor was still quite wobbly and she kept on trying to run and then fell over! But it was good to be in familiar surroundings and she got more steady as the day went on. Caitlyn was keen for us all to pick her up from school and very proudly ‘showed’ her class mates to Taylor and told them that she had a sore head!
