Implant Pre-Op Appointment

Taylor attended a pre-op appointment with the surgeon Darran Murray. Mr Murray had just received the results from Taylor’s CT scan which showed the both her cochlears had not formed properly, which was the cause of her deafness. So we now know that she was definitely born deaf and it not something that occurred afterwards.

Because of this, Mr Murray felt that he would prefer to use the Cochlear Nucleus brand device rather than the one we had chosen. This was because the MedEL coil that needs to be inserted into the cochlear was longer than the Cochlear Nucleus brand one and he didn’t think he would be able to get a full insertion with that. He said that there was a MedEL compressed coil available, but he would prefer not to use that and our best option was to change to the Cochlear Nucleus device. It would have been good to have known that last week when we were agonising over our decision! So in the end, the decision was really taken out of our hands!
